Volunteers plan to converge on Brentwood’s Smith Park on Saturday for trail work

CITIZENS FOR BRENTWOOD GREEN SPACE

Representatives from The Citizens for Brentwood Green Space will be joined on Saturday by volunteers from REI Brentwood and Nashville Hiking Meetup to beautify the trails of Brentwood City Parks’ 400-acre crown jewel: Marcella Vivrette Smith Park.

The National Trails Day event will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Marcella Vivrette Smith Park on Wilson Pike in Brentwood.

A limited number of volunteer spots have been assigned and advance registration is encouraged. Event details can be found at www.rei.com/events or at www.brentwoodgreenspace.org.

Volunteers will be working on several maintenance projects to help improve the footing and visual appeal of the existing trails and park land. There will be hands-on projects for volunteers of all skill levels. Any children under 18 who participate must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

“We are excited members of Nashville Hiking Meetup and volunteers from REI of Brentwood have offered to join us to work on these beautification projects at Brentwood’s largest park,” said Gil Hutchinson, longstanding president of Brentwood Green Space, in a press release announcing the effort. “We encourage everyone to bring a reusable water bottle to cut down on our environmental impact for the day. The folks from REI will be there with swag and refreshments for all the volunteers!”

Although some tools will be provided, Brentwood Green Space suggests that volunteers bring a favorite pair of gloves and a shovel, and wear clothing you don’t mind getting dirty.

“Each year, every REI market awards a few exceptional outdoor non-profit organizations a Community Investment Grant. These organizations often have established partnerships through cooperation in the outdoors with their local REI store,” said Kevin Stitt, Outdoor Programs & Outreach Coordinator at REI Brentwood. “For 2019, members who shopped at their local REI between March 7 and April 8 were given a token to participate and at REI Brentwood over 1,100 members showed their love for Brentwood Green Space’s ‘Smith Park Campsite Build and Trail Improvements’ project. This resulted in a boost of $1,020 and a total of $4,220 in 2019 grant funding to Brentwood Green Space.”

It has been conservatively estimated that over 300,000 adults and youths participate in activities and events at Marcella Vivrette Smith Park each year. Population within 5 miles of the park is 75,972.
