SPORTS YEAR IN REVIEW: Many firsts for area high schools in 2016

There were plenty of firsts for Franklin-area high school athletic teams this past year.

Independence football returns to title game

Independence rode a 29-game winning streak into the Class 5A state championship.

Centennial football pulls off improbable comeback against Franklin

Centennial’s football team overcame a 10-point deficit in the final minute and a half to take down Franklin in the first game of the season.

The win set the tone for the Cougars, who went on to finish the season

Independence basketball earns first banner

The Eagles captured their first District 11-AAA title with a win over Franklin. They went on to finish as Region 6-AAA runners-up before falling in the sectional round.

Franklin basketball has its Cinderella story

The Franklin Rebels basketball team entered the District 11-AAA tournament as a seventh seed and left as the runner-up. It started with an upset win over Brentwood and a victory over Dickson County.

However, a loss against Independence in the district championship and a defeat against Hillsboro in the region semifinals sent the Rebels packing.

Summit football, baseball hit new heights

There were several firsts for Summit’s athletics program in 2016.

Its football team made its first playoff appearance after earning a program-best seven wins during the regular season. It finished second in Region 5-5A.

Summit’s baseball team won its first district and region titles en route to making its inaugural Class AAA state tournament appearance.

BGA, Franklin girls soccer fall in state championship

Franklin’s girls soccer team fell to Clarksville in the Class AAA state title game, while BGA lost to Evangelical Christian School in a championship rematch.
