"Soul Shop" training helps congregations minister to people suffering suicidal desperation

The Tennessee Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP TN) is presenting “Soul Shop™ – Ministering to Suicidal Desperation,” a one-day training to be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, at Cross Point Church-Franklin, 1213 Country Rd, in Franklin.

Soul Shop™ is meant to equip faith community leaders to train their congregations to minister to those impacted by suicidal desperation.

While directed to pastors and faith community leaders, Soul Shop™ training benefits counselors, first responders, and essentially anyone interested in learning how to effectively minister to suicidal desperation.

Developed by Fe Anam Avis, Soul Shop™ equips pastors to speak to suicidal desperation as a regular aspect of their ministries.

Avis himself had experienced a dark time in his life when he contemplated suicide.

“Faith communities have a responsibility not only for preventing suicide and suicide attempts, but also for addressing those impacted by the agony and isolation of suicidal desperation,” Avis said in a press release announcing the training.

The workshop includes addressing the primary obstacles to dealing with suicidal desperation (stigma, fear, and shame); statistics/facts about suicide; and how ministries can create a supportive environment while fundamentally altering the way people deal with this subject and one another. Since its development in 2014, Soul Shop has trained thousands nationally and internationally in suicide awareness and has facilitated the development of suicide prevention plans with numerous community teams. Soul Shop’s visions is to train and equip leaders from 20,000 congregations by the year 2020.

Visit afsp.org/Soul-Shop-TN for details, links, and registration. The workshop fee is $35, which includes the cost of materials, beverages, and lunch. For more information on Soul Shop™, contact Brenda Williams-Denbo at 615-497-3288 or afspbrendawd@gmail.com.
