Anne Rose (Houldin) O’Neill, 69, of Franklin, Tennessee, died on June 8, 2019 after a long illness.
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Joseph John Houldin and Anne Catherine McManus, deceased, Anne was raised in Most Blessed Sacrament parish in Southwest Philadelphia. A 1967 graduate of West Philadelphia Catholic High School for Girls, she excelled academically and played violin in the school orchestra. She enjoyed playing Beethoven’s Fur Elise on the piano at family gatherings. Her favorite song was What the World Needs Now, and family and friends said she truly believed in the lyric “Love, Sweet, Love” for everyone.
After graduating with Honors in History from Immaculata University in 1971, Anne worked as a university librarian and elementary school teacher. But her most important job was being a mother, where she led a loving, happy life as a nurturer and inspiration to her four children.
Anne was a loving wife and mother, daughter and sister and a loyal and caring friend who enjoyed gardening, history, cooking holiday meals, and her daily walks, when she would wave and smile to all who passed by. Anne had an inquiring mind and was genuinely interested in people and their interests.
Over the years, Anne and her family resided in Baltimore, Maryland, Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania, and Brentwood, Tennessee, where she volunteered as a teacher and aide at Scales Elementary School, Holy Family Catholic Church and the Brentwood Library.
Anne is survived by her husband of 45 years, Hugh Brian O’Neill and their children, Lauren H. O’Neill; Brian H. O’Neill, his wife Diana and their children, Siena and John; Claire H. O’Neill; Allison H. O’Neill; her brother, Joseph J. Houldin, his wife Barbara Grelis Houldin and their son, JJ Houldin and his wife Maureen.
Funeral Mass will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12, at Holy Family Catholic Church, with visitation prior to Mass beginning at 12 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made on behalf of Anne Houldin O’Neill to: Sisters of Saint Joseph, Development Office, 9701 Germantown Ave, Philadelphia, PA, 19118.
