Medicine and the Great War presentation will come on the Centennial of Armistice Day, Nov. 11

Medicine and the Great War, a Centennial Review – 2 – 3 p.m. Sunday, November 11, at the John P. Holt Brentwood Public Library.

In remembrance of the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I on Nov 11, 1918, Medicine and the Great War will be presented by Professor Terrence Smith.

Smith will discuss new technologies of that time, casualties, medical advances, important people in WWI medicine, and Vanderbilt’s Hospital Unit ‘S’.

Smith is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University and is a U.S. Army colonel serving as Chief of Aviation Medicine for the Alabama Army National Guard. Smith has spent more than 30 years in the Army and has served with the 3rd Infantry Division in Iraq, a division that was most prominent in actions along the Western Front during the Great War.

He and his wife, Michele, also are Civil War re-enactors and have a keen interest in American history.
