Led by Gil Hutchinson of the Brentwood Green Space and Kevin Stitt of the local REI store, the volunteers revamped a pergola and fence with fresh coats of paint, mulched the trees and shrubbery, and replaced boot scrapers that had been used for several months.

On Saturday, 16 volunteers with both REI and the Citizens for Brentwood Green Space started off the month of June by contributing to their community’s trails at the Marcella Vivrette Smith Park on National Trails Day.
Even in the cool mid-seventies of the morning, most volunteers were beginning to sweat. Although the work was not too arduous, there were chairs situated in the shade of a tent and snacks and refreshments available as well, to ensure everyone’s capabilities were at their peak performance.
Although most of the volunteers came from the Brentwood Green Space and REI, others said they came simply because they enjoy the amenities that their neighborhood park provides and are willing to give back to their community.
“We have beautiful parks I love to enjoy, so being here and volunteering is just helping to preserve that.” Susan Keehley, a Brentwood resident of two years, explained.
Jay Hancock, longtime board member of the Citizens for Brentwood Green Space, said he is a frequent visitor of Smith Park and often utilizes the trails to walk and get some exercise.
“I just love the park and love to come out here and enjoy the facilities; I just appreciate having parks like this and being able to come out here,” Hancock said.
