Nashville native Brandt Snedeker is among a few select favorites to win the Sanderson Farms Championship on Thursday at the Country Club of Jackson in Mississippi, which has hosted the event since 2014.

“I’m excited to come here,” Snedeker said in an interview with WLBT’s Trey Mongrue. “With all the things (the PGA) has done here, this is a great place to start.”

With the PGA’s change of schedule to commence with a September start time, the Sanderson Farms Championship has drawn plenty of interest among players with the winner receiving 500 FedEx Cup points, a two-year PGA tour exemption and an invitation to the 2020 Masters.

The last five winners of the event were all first-time winners, including last year’s champion Cameron Champ. Additionally, four of the last five winners were not full-time PGA tour members the season prior to winning.

The 38-year-old Snedeker, who is making his tournament debut, currently has the second-best odds to win the tournament at 16-1, according to SportsLine, right behind favorite and last week’s Greenbrier Classic winner Joaquin Niemann at 12-1.

“Guys kind of lock up a great year in the fall and set themselves up for success the rest of the year,” Snedeker said. “So, you really need to get off to a fast start so you can kind of not coast, but pick your schedule wisely, make sure you are rested.”

Snedeker is currently ranked No. 41 by the World Golf Rankings and is just one of three golfers in the tournament’s field of 150 to be ranked in the top 50.
