Late Cimaglia field goal lifts Page

A big fourth quarter and late field goal kept the Page Patriots’ undefeated region record alive Friday at Giles County (5-3, 2-2).

The Patriots (5-2, 4-0) entered the fourth quarter trailing by seven, but they outscored the Bobcats 17-7 in the final 12 minutes, capped by Brent Cimaglia’s 23-yard field goal with 11 seconds left to take a 38-35 win.

Giles County threatened to take a 24-7 lead into halftime when it lined up for a 43-yard field goal attempt with nine seconds left in the second quarter. The kick was short, though, and Page’s Cruze Kerrigan capitalized on the chance to get his hands on it. He returned the miss 99 yards for a score, cutting the Bobcats’ lead to 21-14 at the half.

Kerrigan also had a big day on the defensive side of the ball, finishing with 10 total tackles.

After allowing Giles County to score, quarterback Jacob Van Landingham and the Page passing attack caught fire. He connected on touchdown passes of 65, 25 and 75 yards in the second half alone.

The junior signal caller completed 14-of-20 passes for 285 yards and four touchdowns. He also threw one interception. Daniel Callicoat was his main target, catching four passed for 112 yards and two TDs.

When the Bobcats scored with 1:19 left in the game, it looked like overtime was a certainty. The Patriots had other plans, though, and marched 59 yards down the field on nine plays to set up Cimaglia for the game-winner.

Both teams’ offenses were the story of the game. Giles County racked up 588 total yards on 80 plays, while Page had 425 yards on 55 plays.

Bubba Johnson led the way on the ground for Page with 16 rushes for 82 yards. Derrick Bittner added a 75-yard touchdown reception, and Will Pierce had two catches for 39 yards and a score.

The win keeps the Patriots in a tie atop the Region 4-4A standings with Marshall County. The two teams play the last week of the regular season.
