Andrew Hendry, son of Kelli and Drew Hendry, is a senior at Independence High School and this week’s Jet’s Pizza Male Athlete of the Week.
Hendry is a member of the varsity boys cross country team.
Recently, he achieved a new personal record of 16:40 at a meet in Huntsville, Alabama and finished 11th in their region this season. The team also won the Beech Invitational Meet, of which he is very proud.
He got his start running after following in his father’s footsteps.
“My dad ran in college, completed Ironman and always took me to his 5k races,” Hendry said.
When asked what inspires him to train and compete he said, “I have to contribute to my team and I’ve learned to use running as a positive thing that I use as therapy. Since it is mostly mental, I have to constantly stay positive.”
One of his biggest inspirations and role models is his father, Drew. He says he looks up to his father because of how he taught him mental toughness and because he inspires him to keep running. He also looks to his father as an example of how to be a good father and husband.
IHS Cross Country coach Luke Finley said of Hendry, “[He] accomplished the difficult feat of qualifying for and running in four state championship meets.” He also described him as a great senior leader and team captain.
As far as the future, Hendry said he is still exploring his options for college and the idea of continuing to run. After finishing college, he plans to become a professional pilot.
