Connor Hawkins, son of Chris and Stephanie Hawkins, is this week’s Jet’s Pizza male Athlete of the Week.
He is a senior at Franklin High School and a member of the Varsity Golf Team.
He has a tournament scoring average of 74 and a 68 in the second round of the Junior PGA Championship. Additionally, last year, the team came in third place in the State Championship, something Hawkins is very proud of.
Hawkins said he started playing golf with his friends for fun, but quickly realized it was something he wanted to seriously pursue.
When asked what inspires him to continue training and competing he said, “I want to win a State championship and get as good as I can.”
FHS Golf Coach Jon Whipple said of Hawkins, “Connor is a four year member of the golf team. He has been a big part of our successes over the last few years on the golf team including a trip to the state tournament last year. His 75 in the district tournament has helped the team advance to regionals for the third straight year.”
One of his biggest role models is professional golfer Jarrod Lyle.
“He played on the PGA Tour for many years while battling cancer twice and beating it twice,” he said. “He then returned to pro golf and was soon diagnosed with cancer again and just last month he passed away. He fought so hard for his dreams.”
After graduating from FHS this year, he plans to attend either The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga or The University of Alabama. He would like to pursue a career as a heart surgeon or ER doctor.
