Whitney Bryant, daughter of Doug and Treva Bryant, is this week’s Jet’s Pizza Athlete of the Week.
She is a junior at Franklin High School and a member of the girls track team. She runs the 2×400 relay, the 4×400 relay, the 400 meter race and the 800 meter race.
Bryant said that since the season has just begun, major accomplishments are yet to come. However, she said that in a recent meet, she ran in the boys’ 800 meter race and won third place.
She started running in sixth grade after deciding she wanted to honor her mother, who ran track in college, and follow in her footsteps.
When asked what inspires her to train and compete she said, “This season I am trying to hit the walk on standard times for BYU [Brigham Young University], the college I really want to run for.”
She added, “Upon meeting with the head coach, he told me that if I hit these times he would strongly consider me.”
Bryant said that her mother, Treva, is one of her biggest inspirations and role models.
“She is the perfect example of hard work and dedication to everything in life,” she said. “She teaches me to work hard and also inspires me to try and do good in the world.”
Cormac Carolan, the Head Cross Country coach at FHS commended Bryant for her ambition and hard work:
“Whitney had a strong start to her season… She has big goals coming into the season and has worked very hard so far. I have no doubt she will crush her times from last year and set more school records along the way,” Carolan said.
After graduating next year, she hopes to attend Brigham Young University and continue working on her running career there. Career wise, she said she might like to pursue a career that involves helping others or writing.
