Avery Whitt, daughter of Wendell and Christy Whitt, is a sophomore at Battle Ground Academy and a member of the girls varsity tennis team.
She plays court five singles and court two doubles. This year during a match, she came back and won two tiebreakers against St. Cecilia. She also won player of the match week in her match against Franklin Road Academy, which secured a win for the team.
Whitt began seriously playing tennis after giving up another sport she loved, softball. In eighth grade, she made the switch. And although she has played tennis her whole life, this was the first serious swing at the sport.
When training and competing, Whitt looks to her coaches, teammates, and family for motivation. She said, “I have such a strong, awesome support system that continues to push and inspire me.”
He biggest role model is her mother. She said, “Not only is she an outstanding tennis player who inspires me within the sport, but she is also a strong, loving woman who I aspire to be like every day.”
Battle Ground Academy tennis coach, Nancy Jordan said, “Avery has great sportsmanship and is truly a team player. She comes prepared to compete and always gives great effort during our drills at practice… [Her] character is honorable and BGA is proud of her achievements on and off the tennis court.”
After high school, Whitt plans to attend college and get a degree in education to become a teacher. She hopes to teach English or art and plans to play tennis for as long as she can.
