A concert of African-American spirituals and inspirational music will be presented by Inversion Vocal Ensemble, directed by Dave Ragland, at 5:30 p.m. on August 25 in the Fleming Center at Carnton.
The event is sponsored by Sister Cities of Franklin and Williamson County and the Battle of Franklin Trust. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at www.boft.org/events.
Carnton is located at 1345 Eastern Flank Circle in Franklin.
Ticket sales will benefit Sister Cities and The Slaves to Soldiers Paver Project. Nearly 300 enslaved men from Williamson County served as soldiers in the U.S. Army and Navy, or as laborers for the Confederate government, and pavers are being installed at Veterans Park in Franklin commemorate
Last year Inversion became the first African-American Group to perform in the Franklin Masonic Hall since it was built in 1823. The Ensemble is composed of classically trained singers who now call Middle Tennessee home.
GRAMMY winning songwriter Marcus Hummon commissioned Inversion to premier his concert theatrical, FREDERICK DOUGLASS: The Making of a Prophet. They were invited to sing “Precious Lord” (Dr. Martin Luther King’s favorite hymn) at the inaugural memorial ceremony of the National Civil Rights Museum.
Inversion members and Ragland were recently featured in Nick Cave Feat: Nashville, commissioned by the Frist Art Museum and performed to sold out audiences at Schermerhorn Symphony Hall.
Ragland was Musical Director/Composer/Arranger of Nick Cave Feat: Nashville.
He has been named one of Nashville’s Top 40 under 40 for contributions as a composer. Ragland has directed the play “Lady Day Sings at Emerson’s Bar and Grill” at several venues and recently published his first book, “Spirituals & Art Songs Vol. 1.”
Past engagements include: The Kennedy Center Honors, Nashville Symphony, Nashville Opera, and Chattanooga Symphony & Opera. In 2017 he studied Italian opera performance at Melofonetics in Vento, Italy.
