GIRLS SOCCER: Late Collierville surge eliminates Franklin

MURFREESBORO – It looked like the Franklin Lady Rebels would return to the Class AAA finals as they entered the final five minutes of regulation against Collierville Thursday.

However, a game-tying goal by Collierville with three and a half minutes left sent the match to overtime, where the Dragons found a way to pull ahead for the 2-1 victory.

Franklin led for 73 regulation minutes after going up 1-0 from a goal by Maddie Kerr in the third minute.

“We had some chances to go up 2-0,” Franklin head coach Mike Burgoyne said. “And that would have changed the complexion of the game. Hats off to [Collierville,] they worked hard and they beat us in the box. That girl had a great shot and there was nothing we could do about it.”

Franklin led for 73 regulation minutes after going up 1-0 from a goal by Maddie Kerr in the third minute.

“I’m disappointed in the result, but I’m happy for how hard we fought,” Burgoyne stated. “It’s a good team we lost to. Just hard to go down when you’re up 1-0 with three minutes to go and you can see that state final game so close.”

Burgoyne reminded his team about the road it overcame after graduating several key players from last year’s squad.

“We replaced six starters, including Peyton DePreist, who is the leading goal scorer as a freshman in Conference USA,” Burgoyne stated. “We didn’t know what this season was going to look like. We have the luxury of having the depth of talent at Franklin — a lot of good players.”

Franklin will graduate another handful of players this year, including midfielders Caroline DeFranco, Jessica Bissinger and Massey Quiggle, forward Sara Casey and goalkeeper Holly Harris.
