Schools in the Franklin Special Schools District (FSSD) will all be closing two hours early Thursday due to severe weather expected this afternoon, with the National Weather Service forecasting severe thunderstorms and strong winds from 2 p.m. to midnight this afternoon.

All elementary schools in FSSD, save for Poplar Grove Elementary, will dismiss at 1:30 p.m., and all middle schools in FSSD, along with Poplar Grove Elementary, will dismiss at 12:30 p.m., with operations expected to return to normal on Friday.

FSSD joins numerous other school systems also dismissing early, including Maury, Lawrence and Marshall counties, as well as Williamson.

The most severe of the storms is expected from 2 – 6 p.m., with wind speeds expected to reach as high as 40 miles per hour. Showers and thunderstorms will persist until well into the evening, with wind strengths persisting past midnight.
