After a tough battle with county rival Brentwood in Week One, the Franklin Rebels traveled to Rutherford County to face the Riverdale Warriors and got the rebound win, 24-7.
After the two teams scored back to back touchdowns to open the game, with the Warriors quarterback Taylor Yancey connecting with on 80-yard pass to wide receiver Jaylan Simmons and Rebels junior quarterback Joshua Nichols answering with a 64-yard connection to junior wideout Chancellor Bright, we thought we might be in for a shootout.
Franklin, however, wrestled the momentum from Riverdale with two more scores in the first quarter and never relinquished it. First, Nichols found senior tight end Brock Holthaus for 39-yard touchdown with 6:11 left to go in the first. Nichols also hooked up with his senior running back Matt Gaca on a 19-yard touchdown a few minutes later.
Kicker Alex Cundall added a 24-yard field goal in the second quarter to give the Rebels a 24-7 lead, which would also be the game’s final score.
Nichols had another strong game, connecting on his first eight passes, and completing 15-20 passes for 252 yards, three touchdowns and a lone interception for the game.
Bright led Rebels in receiving yards with 101, despite just two receptions. Holthaus and Gaca tied for the lead in that category with three.
Gaca really get going on the ground getting just 59 yards on 16 attempts, the rest of the Rebels managed just 23 yards. He did, however, have the one receiving touchdown.
Next week the Rebels (1-1) will have a chance to showcase their high-powered passing game at home on their new turf against 6-A foe, and county rival, Ravenwood.
