The Franklin Fire Department’s ninth annual Citizens’ Fire Academy has only five places left, but there still is time to apply.

During this hands-on program, participants will fight an actual fire in a controlled environment, rescue a patient trapped in a vehicle during a mock crash, ride on a platform at the top of a ladder truck, learn CPR, and more, an FFD spokesman said.

The academy is an eight-week course that meets from 6-9 p.m. on Thursdays. Classes will be March 19-May 7, 2015. Last year’s group included both men and women, young adults and retirees.

Participants must live or work in the City of Franklin, be at least 21 years of age, and attend seven of the eight classes. The classes take place at the department’s training center on Century Court.
