Mathnasium of Franklin will celebrate its grand opening Saturday, April 25, and all are invited.

Founded in Los Angeles more than 35 years ago, Mathnasium offers proven mathematics instruction for students in second through 12th grade.

“At Mathnasium, we know that virtually any child can be successful in math. It’s a matter of teaching it in a way that makes sense to them,” Diana Wills, center director/co-owner, said. “We utilize a time-tested approach that provides initial and ongoing assessments, customized learning plans, personalized instruction and guided practice to build each student’s math understanding and skills.”

The Mathnasium story began more than 35 years ago, when creator Larry Martinek was inspired to find a better way to teach math.

As an instructor in public and private schools where he was exposed to both stellar and struggling math programs, Martinek identified a common theme – a vast disconnect between students’ learningeskills and the curriculum theye were expected to master. He began assembling and developing a blend of methods and materials that focused on helping children build deep mathematical understanding through a combination of mental, visual, verbal, tactile and written exercises instead of memorization and repetition.

Today, Mathnasium has grown into a worldwide movement specializing in teaching children math in a way that makes sense to them.

In Franklin, Mathnasium is conveniently located at 539 Cool Springs Blvd., Suite 105, in the Thoroughbred Village Shopping Center.

“When math makes sense, kids leap way ahead – whether they started out far behind or already ahead in math,” said Wills, who earned her BS degree in mathematics with a minor in secondary education from Northeastern University and her masters in information systems from Pace University.

“I want every child in the Franklin community to truly understand math by teaching it in the way that makes sense to them.”

She and her husband, Mathnasium of Franklin co-owner Theodore Wills, look forward to introducing local families to the Mathnasium Method at the center’s grand opening on Saturday, April 25.

The open house celebration is planned from 12 to 4 p.m. with food, games and a chance to win a free month of membership to Mathnasium.

“For the regular Mathnasium Program, we are offering 50% off of the registration and assessment fee for those who sign up at the Grand Opening Celebration.,” Wills said.

WIlls also said for the Summer Program, they are offering a $50 discount for those who enroll by May 31.
