The Franklin Rebels relied on their instincts to pull out a 66-56 home win over the Glencliff Colts in the Region 6-AAA quarterfinals Tuesday.

The Rebels entered the contest prepared to take on a one-three-one zone. However, once they found success against it early in the first half, Glencliff switched to a man-to-man pressure defense.

Franklin head coach Jamie Wilson said the adjustment caught his team off-guard.

“We were expecting one-three-one; that’s what they’ve ran 98 percent of the time ran for the last two and a half to three weeks,” he said.

“We didn’t work on any man pressure for the last two or three days. I thought they did a great job of just going back to instinct and things that we had drilled for the last two years.”

After falling behind 17-13 at the end of the first quarter, Franklin stormed to a 33-30 lead by halftime.

“We talked about who was winning what game, depending on the style,” Wilson said. “When it was up-tempo, they [Glencliff] were loving it and they were going on their run. When it was controlled tempo and we were taking the shots that we wanted to take, we were winning the ball game.”

The Rebels’ pace opened up backdoor opportunities for them throughout the fourth quarter, as they outscored Glencliff 23-12 to close the game.

“We went high and wide and got a lot of backdoor action,” Wilson said. “We did a really good job of getting some pass fakes, being patient and very efficient in the second half.”

Garrison Mathews led Franklin in scoring with 13 points, while Joe Critchlow and Zach Muir dropped 12 apiece. Tanner Spalding added eight points and nine rebounds.

FHS will play Hillsboro in the region semifinals at 4 p.m. Thursday.
