Aleece Givens, daughter of Natasha Mangrum and Christopher Hasty, is a junior at Fairview High School and a member of the JROTC program at FHS.
She is on the Mountain Man Memorial March Half Marathon Team and competes in the Heavy Division.
Givens said she started JROTC as a Raider, but naturally moved into doing the Mountain Man as many of her peers did. She said she automatically loved it.
When asked what inspires her to continue training and competing she said, “I’m already a competitive person as it is so I always try to push myself to become better, but also since we are in teams I try to be better for my team. I try to be stronger and faster so I can be able to pull and motivate my team members. I always try to be there and prepared to take on the extra weight if someone is falling behind.”
One of her biggest role models is First Sergeant Turk.
“He’s always been a role model ever since I joined. He always is able to push through and see the good in things,” she said. “He’s also a great motivator… He’s helped me to overcome many obstacles and taught me how to push through the pain.”
After graduating from FHS next year, she is planning to serve in the U.S. Military. She would like to work as a Military Working Dog Handler or combat medic. Eventually, she would like to be a doctor in the Army.
