Grayson McCullough, son of Emily and Jesse McCullough, is a senior at Centennial High School and a member of the Varsity Wrestling Team.
He said the biggest highlight for him this season was achieving the title of Region 7 126-pound Champion. He ended the season with 48 wins and 126 wins for his high school career and went 5-1 at the TSSAA State Dual Championships helping his team to a 4th place finish.
McCullough started wrestling his freshman year after encouragement from one of his teachers and Head Wrestling Coach, Phillip Pelkey.
Pelkey said of McCullough’s start, “Grayson started wrestling his freshman year when I pulled him out of my study hall. We joke about it because somehow, we got into a discussion on who could do a long plank and he said he could do one for six minutes and he did. I told him, ‘I’ll see you at wrestling practice,’ and he showed up.”
When asked what inspires him to train and compete he said, “I hate losing and I never give up.”
One of his biggest role models is Cole Iler, a previous captain of the wrestling team. “He was the captain of the wrestling team when I was a freshman… he taught me hard work and made me feel welcomed on the team.”
After graduating from CHS, he will attend The University of Alabama Huntsville on a full academic scholarship to study Aerospace Engineering.
